Many women decide to receive breast augmentation to enhance and improve the appearance of their breasts, which sometimes lose firmness and volume as the result of age, pregnancy, and rapid weight loss and gain. Some women seeking breast augmentation were simply born with smaller, possibly underdeveloped breasts.
The transumbilical breast augmentation procedure, or TUBA is a method by which saline breast implants can be inserted using the belly button as the point of entry. This method is favored by many women as it is truly scarless breast augmentation, with no visible scars on or around the breast. TUBA offers women an alternative to traditional breast augmentation surgery.
Why Choose TUBA?
The transumbilical or belly button approach is favorable for many reasons. This method takes less time than traditional breast augmentation, making it a quicker procedure, most TUBA procedures take about 40 minutes to complete. This has several advantages. The anesthesia required for the surgery is less when compared to other forms of breast augmentation, this means a faster recovery and less downtime.
Many women report that they often are able to resume their normal activities the same day. Also, with this form of breast augmentation, the rates of infection are lower and blood loss is minimal.
Often times, for those choosing saline implants the TUBA method is the ideal choice. The implants are rolled flat around the endoscope and then are filled once they are placed. Contrary to popular belief, these implants can be placed above or below the muscle.
Dr. Ashruf utilizes state of the art technology and equipment when performing the TUBA. The use of this advanced technology makes all of the “myths” associated with the TUBA procedure disappear.

Who is a Candidate
Ideal candidates for TUBA breast augmentation include women who:
- Have a strong desire to conceal surgical scars
- Believe their breasts are underdeveloped or too small
- Desire to increase the firmness and volume of their breasts
- Have breast asymmetry, where one breast is noticeably larger than the other
Dr. Ashruf prepares individualized breast augmentation procedures following your initial consultation, where he reviews your medical history and sets specific goals for your breast augmentation surgery.
The TUBA breast augmentation procedure requires the patient to undergo general anesthesia, and typically takes one to two hours to complete. During the procedure, Dr. Ashruf makes a small incision inside the upper rim of the navel and creates a channel from the incision to the breast using an endoscopic camera.
The tissues behind the breast are expanded to create a pocket for the saline implant, which is inserted through the channel following the removal of the tissue expander. Once the empty breast implant is accurately placed, it is filled with saline to the desired profile. The endoscopic camera is removed, closing the channel between the navel and the breast, and the incision is closed using sutures or surgical tape.
Most patients report minor pain and some swelling around the incision site and in the breasts as the implants adjust. This discomfort typically fades over a one to two week period.
TUBA breast augmentation patients are encouraged to relax for the week following surgery. Many women return to their daily routines after one to two weeks, but are encouraged to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activity for up to six weeks following the procedure.
