Whether we’re fighting time, genetics, or lifestyle changes, it can be difficult to improve the shape of our buttocks through exercise alone.

Thankfully, a Brazilian butt lift is a method of buttock augmentation that results in a more youthful, uplifted buttock. This procedure, commonly performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Salman Ashruf, provides a patient not only with their desired buttock, but also often delivers a more ideal figure overall.

How is Brazilian Butt Lift Done?

A Brazilian butt lift is achieved by injecting fat, collected from other sections of the patient’s body, into the buttock, thereby diminishing the undesirable fat around the buttock and improving the size, feel, and shape of each buttock. Donor fat for the augmentation is most commonly collected from the flanks, lower back, abdomen, and thighs.

In order to ensure successful transfer of the patient’s own fat cells, Dr. Ashruf uses low-pressure aspiration, a process that allows the fat cells to remain viable for re-injection. The fat is re-injected into targeted areas in order to contour the buttocks precisely and ideally. Because the fat injected during a Brazilian butt lift procedure is your own, your body is more likely to accept the improvements made during the plastic surgery procedure.

This technique enhances the natural shape of the buttocks as well as removes troublesome fat deposits from designated parts of your thighs and abdomen. Due to the fact that the patient’s waist area diminishes, and the buttock becomes fuller and shapelier, the procedure improves the overall curvature of the body.

The Benefits of Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery

A Brazilian butt lift provides a patient with a buttock that is rounder, fuller, and smoother than before. Additionally, the procedure removes stubborn areas of fat that the patient may have been struggling to lose through diet and exercise.

The procedure does not require the use of implants or an overly aggressive injection of fat. The fat injected, with precision, is your own, increasing the odds of a successful, long-lasting fat transfer procedure. This type of body augmentation creates an overall improvement in a patient’s figure, thanks to the way the procedure shrinks the waist while lifting the buttock.

Recipients of Brazilian butt lifts often feel more satisfied with the way their clothes fit. The insecurities a patient may have felt about the shape or texture of their buttock are transformed into points of pride and confidence.

Who Is Eligible For Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian butt lift is the right body augmentation procedure for you if:

  • You are close to or stable at your ideal weight.
  • You are in overall good health, without a life-threatening illness or a medical condition that could interfere with your healing.
  • You have healthy skin elasticity and muscle tone.
  • You feel you have excess fat in your back and hips.
  • You will be able to take one to two weeks away from work to recover.
  • You are a non-smoker. Unfortunately, smoking close to the time of the procedure can make it more difficult for your body to accept the transferred fat.
  • You have an open, positive attitude toward body contouring procedures.
  • You have specific, realistic goals for your procedure.

After consulting with a patient, Dr. Ashruf may determine that there is not adequate fat on their body to achieve the desired results with a Brazilian buttock augmentation. In these cases, Dr. Ashruf may recommend a fat transfer combined with gluteal implants.

While this technique of body contouring achieves a thinner waist and fuller buttock, it does not address sagging skin that may have resulted from aging or major weight loss. If sagging is also an issue that you would like addressed, speak to Dr. Ashruf about a body lift consultation.

BBL Consultation

When you meet with Dr. Ashruf for your initial consultation about BBL or other surgical procedures, he will review your medical and surgical history, your medications, and any conditions that may be affecting your health. He will next perform a physical exam.

After assessing your buttocks and potential fat donor sites, he will identify the areas of the buttock which can benefit from the Brazilian butt lift, as well as which sections of your body will provide the best fat transfer and results. After Dr. Ashruf has discussed these donor sites with you, as well as your and your body’s specific needs, and once you decide you are ready, Dr. Ashruf’s friendly and helpful staff will schedule your surgery date.

Dr. Ashruf and his team will provide you with all necessary pre-operation information, and are happy to answer any questions you have.

Preparation for the Procedure

As your surgery date approaches, maintain a healthy regimen of diet and exercise. There is no need to go through extreme weight loss, in fact, Dr. Ashruf prefers you are at a stable weight before undertaking this body transformation.

Do not eat twelve hours before plastic surgery procedures.

Schedule time off work for your post-procedure recovery. Give yourself one to two weeks to ensure that you have a comfortable recovery and achieve your ideal augmentation results.

Make a point of purchasing all your necessary recovery items, such as gauze and compression garments, before your surgery date. You will not be able to drive or move as you would normally in the days after your procedure.

Most importantly, before you receive your Brazilian butt lift, relax! Face your procedure with excitement and an open mind. Dr. Ashruf has years of experience with the latest in surgical technologies and has provided dream buttock and body transformations for countless patients.

How is Brazilian Butt Lift Performed?

A Brazilian butt lift usually takes four to five hours to perform. The patient will be administered a localized anesthetic for the procedure, though Dr. Ashruf may opt to perform the lift with the patient under general anesthesia if he feels the surgery may be more involved. A Brazilian butt lift is less invasive than traditional butt lift procedures and is thus performed on an outpatient basis.

While Dr. Ashruf will determine the type of liposuction that is best for your buttock augmentation, he most often employs the method of suction-assisted liposuction. To perform this technique, Dr. Ashruf will make small incisions in the donor areas. He will insert a thin, hollow tube known as a cannula, and with the help of negative pressure and tumescent fluid, a saline solution of lidocaine and epinephrine, he will remove the fat with ease and comfort for the patient. The low-pressure technique preserves the viability of the fat cells.

Dr. Ashruf will then re-inject the extracted fat into various areas of the buttock after processing it for purity, achieving the desired fullness and shape in the buttock area.

Post Procedure Dos & Don’ts

After your buttock enhancement procedure, in addition to giving yourself ample time to recover, you will also want to modify your daily behavior for one to two weeks and to remain mindful of certain habits in the months following.

Following Your Brazilian Butt Lift, DO:

  • Ask a caregiver to drive you home after your procedure. If possible, get their assistance around the house for the first few days after your Brazilian butt lift.
  • Sleep on your side or stomach.
  • Consider wearing a compression garment for the first four weeks of your recovery to alleviate your discomfort and help achieve desired results.
  • Reach out to Dr. Ashruf’s friendly staff with any questions or concerns you might have.

Following Your Brazilian Butt Lift, DON’T:

  • Sit directly on your buttocks.
  • Exercise right away. Short, intermittent walks are recommended throughout the day, even the day of surgery, but major weight loss or gain will affect the shape and contour of the buttock and surrounding areas.
  • Avoid heavy lifting. Light exercise may be resumed after two weeks of recovery.
  • Worry. Temporary swelling, bruising, tightness, numbness, and discomfort are not uncommon sensations after a Brazilian butt lift, but they will subside. Swelling can take eight to twelve weeks to diminish.

Dr. Ashruf and his team will work with you before and after your Brazilian butt lift to ensure you feel confident about your recovery regimen.

While it may take up to six months before a patient sees their final result, the first month of recovery is an important window; take care that you are not affecting the body’s willingness to accept the desired body sculpting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brazilian Butt Lift

Does fat transfer last?

Because fat transfer uses your own tissue, your results are virtually permanent. Once a new blood supply is established, the fat cells can exist in their new location for the long term.

How long does Brazilian butt lift last?

A Brazilian butt lift can last as long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. This helps prevent unwanted weight gain.

How does fat transfer work?

Fat transfer uses liposuction to collect fatty tissue from one area of the body and inject it into another area of the body. It’s a more natural and less-invasive alternative to implant surgery.

Is Brazilian buttock lift painful?

A Brazilian butt lift requires only minimal incisions, so it’s well-tolerated by most patients. It’s performed without general anesthesia, meaning downtime is drastically reduced.

Is Brazilian buttock lift permanent?

In theory, the Brazilian butt lift can last for the long term once the fat cells settle into their new location. However, your results are dependent on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following your aftercare instructions.

What are the side effects of BBL?

It’s common to experience some discomfort and swelling after a Brazilian butt lift. You can manage this with medications prescribed by your plastic surgeon.

What is the recovery time for fat transfer to buttocks?

This can depend on your unique surgical plan, but most patients take about one week of downtime away from work. If you work a light office job, you can likely return to work sooner than more physical jobs. You should still follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions for avoiding sitting for long periods of time.

When can I sit after bbl?

You should make sure to minimize your time sitting down for the first 2-4 weeks after surgery. This also includes lying on your back while sleeping. Your plastic surgeon can help you learn the best ways to avoid putting pressure on your treatment area, as well as recommend special pillows that can help.

How common are buttock implants?

Buttock implants are becoming less common with the growing popularity of the Brazilian butt lift. That’s because implants can require a more invasive procedure, leading to longer downtime and more extensive recovery. Additionally, the BBL achieves a more natural look and feel.

How long does fat grafting surgery take?

This depends on the results you want to achieve. A normal BBL procedure can take an hour or more, but this can be longer or shorter based on your unique surgical procedure.

Brazilian Butt Lift Safety Information

Glúteal fat grafting, which involves fat grafting to the buttocks and hip areas, is also known as Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL. This procedure has seen a significant increase over the past several years.

The BBL procedure is a culmination of both liposuction and fat transfer procedures and it has been well recognized in the medical literature that this procedure carries significant risks as compared to other medical procedures.

In order raise awareness of the risks, in 2018 and 2019, two multi-society safety advisories raised awareness of the risks to the general public and subsequently the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) have published a position paper on safety with gluteal fat grafting.
