Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty or a nose job, is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States. It is specially designed to reshape the inner or outer nose for functional or cosmetic purposes.

Using one of two techniques, the cartilage and bone in your nose is altered to enhance the natural symmetry, proportions, and overall beauty of your face. As a result, rhinoplasty can also further your health and self-confidence.

Why People Get Nose Surgery

Cosmetic

There are a variety of reasons why men and women choose to undergo nose surgery. Often, clients are unhappy with the physical appearance of their nose and request a strictly cosmetic procedure. Nose surgery can correct a variety of cosmetic nasal issues, including:

  • Asymmetry
  • Bumps
  • Nose width
  • Nostril angle and size
  • Large or protruding nose tip
  • Relation to lip and forehead

For any nasal concerns, Dr. Ashruf and his team of professionals at our Hanover, Maryland office work closely with each patient in order to achieve optimal results and lasting patient satisfaction.

Functional

Another common reason people opt for nose surgery is to correct a physical issue that impairs breathing. While some people are born with an obstructed airway, breathing issues can also develop with age or as a result of trauma to the nose or a previously botched surgery.

In order to repair and restore all function, Dr. Ashruf will work primarily on the inside of the nose, but will often need to change the outside appearance of the nose as well. Dr. Ashruf uses the most advanced nasal surgery techniques to ensure that the surgery is successful in restoring function and giving the client a look that they love.

Good Candidates

In order to ultimately determine whether or not you are a good candidate for nose surgery, request a consultation with Dr. Ashruf today.

While there is no age requirement in order to be considered for rhinoplasty, it is highly recommended that minors wait until their nose is fully developed before undergoing surgery. For girls, this is usually around ages 14 or 15 and, for boys, ages 16 or 17.

It is important that candidates are in good health. While rhinoplasty is a very common procedure in the United States and the risks are minimal, it is still important to consider potential complications depending on the case severity; Dr. Ashruf will explain all aspects of the procedure, pros and cons, to make sure you are fully comfortable with your decision to undergo rhinoplasty. Dr. Ashruf does everything is his power to make sure that cosmetic satisfaction can be achieved in harmony with full nasal function.

Types of Nose Surgery

While there are many different types and subtypes of nose surgery, the following are some of the more common procedures.

Augmentation

Augmentation rhinoplasty increases the size or fullness of specific parts of the nose. This can be done for cosmetic reasons, such as adding height to the nose bridge in order to give it a more attractive contour and appearance. Augmentation surgery can also be used for functional reasons, such as adding structural support.

When performing augmentation rhinoplasty, Dr. Ashruf will implement bone or tissue grafting in order to build up the deficient part of the nose. If possible, the cartilage is taken from another part of the nose, but it can also be taken from the rib bone or other sources in your body. In some cases synthetic material is utilized.

Reduction

Reduction rhinoplasty is a procedure that removes or reduces unsightly nasal contours in order to make the patient’s nose more proportionate to their face. Slimming a bulbous nose tip by removing some of the cartilage in the area would be an example of reduction rhinoplasty.

Dr. Ashruf will perform a full nasal exam to get a full picture of what will need to be done to achieve the best results.

Sometimes, reducing the size of one section of the nose will make other areas of the nose appear disproportionate. For example, the nostrils may appear too large once the nose width is minimized, so they may have to be reduced as well in order to complete the look.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a specific type of rhinoplasty that repairs a deviated septum. The septum is the bone and cartilage that divides the nose in half, creating left and right nostrils. When the septum is deviated, or out of position, it can cause breathing problems, nose bleeds, and other health issues. Septoplasty corrects the alignment of the septum in order to permit regular airflow and restore other functional issues.

Post-Traumatic

Post-traumatic rhinoplasty repairs the functional and aesthetic features of the nose after an injury. If the nose has been broken, Dr. Ashruf may have to re-fracture and set the nose again at the beginning of the surgery to best manipulate it.

Most broken noses can be operated on within 10 days, but it may take months for more significant injuries to be ready for surgery.

Revision

Dr. Ashruf is highly skilled in both primary and revision rhinoplasty, making sure patients do receive their desired nose surgery results.

Similar to post-traumatic rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty fixes the appearance and/or functionality of the nose, although in this case it is in response to prior rhinoplasty surgeries. Revision rhinoplasty is not uncommon and can be necessary even after working with the most reputable surgeons in the field.

For revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Ashruf will spend a significant amount of time understanding the existing structure of your nose and work that has already been done. He will then identify and fix the problem using the most up to date techniques and technology.

Ethnic

Ethnic rhinoplasty focuses on achieving the patient’s desired results while still preserving the unique nasal features of those with ethnic backgrounds. This is often applied to those with African American, Asian, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern backgrounds. Dr. Ashruf has worked with patients from a wide variety of backgrounds and always tailors his approach to the individual’s needs and desired results.

Procedure Techniques

There are two basic approaches to nose surgery: closed and open techniques.

Closed

In closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty, all of the surgical incisions are made inside of the nostrils. Many people prefer this method since there is no visible scarring after the surgery. This technique may limit the doctor’s access to the entirety of the bone and cartilage, so it is not the optimal technique for all types of procedures and cases.

Open

In open (external) rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small 4-5mm incision across the columella connecting the left and right nostrils. In this way, the skin draped across the nose can be lifted to give the doctor total visibility and access to the nasal structure. While this may result in a very small scar at the base of the nose, it is usually not noticeable once healed.

While both the open and closed rhinoplasty techniques can be highly effective, the technique that Dr. Ashruf and you ultimately decide on will take into consideration a number of factors including any pre existing work and the results desired.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

In the immediate days following the surgery, patients will be instructed to get plenty of rest. There may be mild discomfort associated with nose surgery recovery but it can usually treated with aspirin. Pain medication prescriptions can be provided as well. Patients should sleep with their head elevated, change the bandages as instructed, and avoid touching the nose area.

It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising around your nose and eyes after your surgery. Visible swelling usually dissipates within 2-3 weeks, and while some results can be enjoyed once swelling has subsided, it can sometimes take up to a year for final results to emerge depending on the case.

Follow-up appointments will be scheduled for the initial weeks after the surgery. At this time, a cast or necessary stitches will be removed. The doctor will also make sure that healing process is going as expected.

If you have any questions or concerns during the healing process please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Cost

The cost of rhinoplasty is dependent on the technique undergone and the specifics of the nose surgery case. Undergoing additional facial procedures will alter the price. The helpful staff at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and Laser Center of Maryland will gladly provide you with a custom quote for your nose surgery after Dr. Ashruf has performed a consultation examination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a nose job take to perform?

Although this can vary based on your unique rhinoplasty procedure, surgery usually takes 2-3 hours to perform.

How do I prepare for a nose job?

Make sure to prepare for your rhinoplasty by following Dr. Ashruf’s instructions, including stopping smoking or taking certain medications. Additionally, arrive to your surgery date wearing loose, easily-removable clothes and in a fasted state (if instructed).

How long is recovery from rhinoplasty?

It can take up to 6 weeks for complete recovery from rhinoplasty, but you may be able to return to light activities as well as work or school sooner. Dr. Ashruf will give you the best idea of when you can expect to return to your regular schedule.

What are the side effects of rhinoplasty?

It’s common to have some bruising, swelling, and redness around the eyes and nose for a few weeks after surgery. These can be managed with ice packs, medications, and keeping your head elevated.

Is nose job permanent?

Yes – the results of a rhinoplasty procedure are long-lasting when you follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions.

What is closed rhinoplasty?

A closed rhinoplasty is a technique that uses incisions concealed completely within the nostrils. This gives it the benefit of no noticeable scarring.

What is external rhinoplasty?

External rhinoplasty is another term for an open rhinoplasty, where an incision is made across the tissue between the nostrils (columella). It allows the nose to be pulled upward so your plastic surgeon can gain access to the structures underneath.

Can a nose job make your nose smaller?

A nose job is one of the most effective ways to reduce the size of various parts of the nose. This includes aspects like the tip, the bridge, or the nostrils.

Can rhinoplasty help sinus problems?

A septorhinoplasty is a technique that can sometimes help sinus problems by correcting a deviated septum (where the cartilage between the nostrils blocks the passage of air due to injury or malformation).

Do nose jobs last forever?

Although the nose can still change due to factors like aging or injury, a nose job is a permanent procedure. The best way to ensure you get the most out of your results is by following your board-certified plastic surgeon’s instructions.

Can I sleep on my side after rhinoplasty?

It is not recommended that patients sleep on their side or stomach for several weeks following rhinoplasty. This is because it may place pressure on your nose, which may impact results.

Can nasal polyps change shape of nose?

Nasal polyps that are large enough may change the shape of the nose.
