What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure that exfoliates, or resurfaces, the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth acne scars, and improve the texture of the skin. Dermabrasion can also help with fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, known as marionette lines. In some cases, dermabrasion can also be used to improve sun damage and uneven skin tone.

What is the Difference between Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is the more aggressive procedure that involves downtime for a few days following the treatment. It is designed for deep scars and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion utilizes similar resurfacing techniques, however, this is done using crystals, so there is NO downtime after the procedure. The microdermabrasion procedure is designed for skin maintenance and improvement of skin texture, and tone.

What Can I Expect from a Dermabrasion Treatment at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery of Maryland?

Dr. Ashruf successfully performs dermabrasion procedures on all skin types, and results show skin that is renewed with lesser scars and improvement in hyperpigmentation, skin tone and texture, as well as ablation of facial wrinkles.

What Does the Dermabrasion Treatment Involve?

Dr. Ashruf will begin with an evaluation that will assess the skin and determine the extent of treatments needed. Next, he will use a topical numbing to numb the area. In some cases, where there are significant treatment areas, Dr. Ashruf recommends patients to use the PRO NOX system, which involves breathing gas to make the procedure very tolerable and comfortable. Patients do have the option of sedation for this procedure as well. Using a custom-designed calibrated tool, called a dermabrader, Dr. Ashruf can then begin to resurface the skin.

The dermabrader has specific sized and shaped applicators, which are faceted like fine diamonds. These are called diamond fraises. These diamond chips provide the maximum abrasion, yet are constructed in order to be able to perform the very tolerable procedure. Patients can work with Dr. Ashruf to view the various applicators to see which would be best for their scarring concerns.

What are the Different Types of Dermabrader Applicators?

We are proud to offer our dermabrasion patients a wide selection of all the following diamond fraises, each one designed to treat various wrinkles and scars:

  • Pear Shaped
  • Dome Shaped
  • Bullet Shaped
  • Mini Bullet Shaped
  • Cone Shaped
