What is Eyelid Surgery?

Also commonly referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery involves the surgical removal of excess skin and sometimes fat around the upper or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is an excellent way to turn back to the effects of time to achieve a more revived, youthful appearance. Eyelid surgery not only improves the position and appearance of the eyelids, but it also restores an attractive balance to the entire face.

Eyelid surgery is a safe, effective way to rejuvenate your expression. It is often performed to correct multiple cosmetic concerns in the eye area, including:

Concerns Addressed By Eyelid Surgery

  • Sagging or loose skin in the upper eyelid that disturbs the natural contours of the eye, sometimes to the point of interrupting peripheral vision
  • Excess deposits of fat around the eyelids that create a puffy appearance
  • Lower eyelids that droop, exposing the whites of the eyes
  • Bags, folds and wrinkles underneath the eyes

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is an ideal procedure for both men and women who are interested in reviving the appearance of their eyelids. Individuals who are generally healthy, have no contraindicating medical conditions, do not smoke or are willing to quit before surgery, and have realistic expectations may be candidates for this procedure.

If you have excess tissue, drooping, or wrinkling around your eyes, or have difficulty seeing past your lowered lids, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery.

If your upper or lower eyelids make you look more tired, sad, angry, or aged than you really are, call the Cosmetic Plastic Surgery & Laser Center of Maryland for a private consultation today.

Complementary Procedures

Eyelid Surgery can be safely and successfully combined with a variety of treatments to achieve your ideal, revived results. Below are just some of the procedures our patients frequently combine for beautiful, flattering rejuvenation:

Browlift Surgery

Patients may have developed a drooping, wrinkled brow that affects their vision or ages their appearance. By making easily-concealed incisions in the hairline, Dr. Ashruf will tighten, lift, and smooth the skin on patient’s foreheads. Any excess skin will be removed. Incisions heal well and any scarring is concealed within the hair. A browlift, when combined with an eyelift is an excellent way to achieve an overall refreshed, energetic appearance.

Restylane

Our faces lose youthful volume with age. Restylane is a highly popular dermal filler designed to restore volume and smooth away wrinkles in targeted areas of the face, as well as the hands. Restylane’s main ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a natural component of healthy, youthful skin. Restylane comes in a variety of formulations designed to erase wrinkles and add volume to specific facial features.

The results accomplished with Restylane will last between six and nine months but may easily extend to last for years with touch-up appointments. Many patients decide to combine eyelid surgery with a careful regimen of Restylane for long-lasting, natural-looking rejuvenation of their entire face!

Radiesse

Radiesse is another dermal filler designed to restore facial volume and combat wrinkles. The main ingredient in Radiesse is Calcium Hydroxylapatite, an ingredient that naturally-occurs within our bodies. Radiesse not only adds volume and fills in wrinkles, but it also encourages your body to jumpstart its production of collagen within the skin. The collagen will add natural volume and extend the results accomplished with Radiesse.

Results last for a year or more!

The type of dermal filler a patient decides to pair with their eyelid surgery will depend on their preference and Dr. Ashruf’s professional recommendation.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery can be performed under either local or general anesthetic, depending on the patient’s preference.

Patients will receive individualized instructions before their eyelid surgery. All patients will need to discontinue smoking at least three weeks before their surgery date. Avoid using any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for two weeks prior to your eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients will be able to return home on the same day as their procedure. Patients will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive them home following their procedure, as they will not be able to drive themselves.

Patients will receive bandaging, gauze, and any necessary eye drops or ointments following their procedure.

A patient may receive an upper eyelid procedure, a lower eyelid procedure, or both. To perform upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Ashruf will make an incision in the natural crease of the upper lid. The incision will follow along with the inside corner to the outside edge of the eye. Dr. Ashruf will carefully excise excess, loose skin to create a smoother, lifted appearance of the upper eyelid. The incision will be closed with delicate sutures. Dr. Ashruf’s highly trained staff will monitor you following your eyelid surgery until you are approved to return home.

What is the Recovery Like?

After your eyelid surgery, you may experience mild discomfort that can be easily controlled with a cold compresses and medication that will be prescribed to you. The amount of time you will need to take off of work will depend on the methods used during your surgery, and Dr. Ashruf will advise you of any necessary aftercare in order to ensure proper healing and reduce the risk of post-surgical infection.

  • On average, patients need to take a week off work in order to get adequate rest and ensure an ideal healing process. It is not uncommon for the eyes to fatigue easily during the recovery period. Frequent naps are recommended.
  • Patients will return to Dr. Ashruf’s office within the first week of their recovery to have any stitches removed.
  • Avoid sun exposure following your eyelid surgery. Patients will receive dark, protective eyewear to use until they have completed their healing.
  • Patients will also want to avoid any activities that could increase blood flow to their eyes for the first three to four weeks of recovery. These activities include crying, bending over, heavy lifting, or playing sports.

Eyelid Surgery Results

As any post-procedure swelling and bruising subside, patients will notice their eyes look smoother and more lifted. Eyelid surgery will transform a baggy, drooping, and wrinkled appearance into a more alert, youthful expression. Patients look revived and awake. You will look as if you just got home from a long, restful retreat!

Cost of Eyelid Surgery

The price of a patient’s blepharoplasty will depend on the details of the patient’s treatment plan, such as whether they will receive work on both or simply the upper or lower lid. Once you have completed your consultation with Dr. Ashruf, you will receive a personalized plan for your eyelid surgery. You will also receive a cost breakdown that reflects your individualized treatment.

The eyes truly define the face. If yours are beginning to show signs of age, revive them with Dr. Ashruf. Enjoy noticeable but subtle rejuvenation with individually-tailored eyelid surgery.
