What is the IPL Photofacial?

The IPL — or intense pulsed light — photofacial is an aesthetic treatment that uses broadband light to restore and rejuvenate the skin. Specifically, IPL photofacials can help improve the appearance of photo-damaged or sun-damaged skin, facial redness, pigmented spots, large pores, as well as wrinkles and fine lines.

How Does it Work?

IPL photofacials restore the skin by delivering a non-ablative high-intensity broadband light directly to the deep layers of the skin, otherwise known as the dermis. Because this broadband light only reaches the deepest layers of the skin, the upper layer (the epidermis), remains unharmed. It can be used to improve the appearance of skin on the face, neck, and hands.

What Should I Expect from an IPL Photofacial?

Each IPL photofacial typically takes between 20-30 minutes.

In order to see substantial results, we usually recommend that patients receive between 3-4 treatments. Patients usually start to see dramatic changes after the first or second treatment. Each session needs to be undergone between 3-4 weeks of each other.

The procedure itself involves absolutely no downtime. While many patients experience redness similar to that of a sunburn, this should subside within a few days. In order to protect your skin in its sensitive post-photofacial state and help this redness go away more quickly, you should regularly wear sunscreen after treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Patients with sun damaged skin, rosacea, facial blood vessels and capillaries, pigmentation issues, or enlarged pores can benefit from IPL photofacial treatments. People with darker complexions, tanned skin, or spray tans can not receive IPL photofacials. Keep in mind that if you have a mustache or a beard and receive an IPL photofacial in these areas, you may experience patchy hair loss as the result of treatment.
