With significant weight loss, men and women tend to experience noticeable skin laxity throughout the upper and lower region of their bodies. While this is a huge accomplishment, the excess skin can cause a person to develop new insecurities or feel uncomfortable with their new body. A body lift is designed to remove loose excess skin throughout the upper and lower regions of the body to reveal the newly defined contour.

The upper body lift provides contour to the upper arms, breasts, and the upper back. The lower body lift is performed on the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. It is time to feel good in your own skin; contact our office today to request a body lift consultation with Dr. Ashruf.

Dr. Salman Ashruf is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in the most advanced minimally invasive technologies for his procedures. His mission is to help his patients achieve their aesthetic goals while providing natural-looking results.

About Body Lifts

The term ‘body lift’ describes the combination of an upper body lift and lower body lift. These transformational procedures remove lax skin throughout the upper and/or lower half of the body after weight loss or as a result of aging. A body lift can be done as a comprehensive procedure or can be broken down into either the lower body treatment or the upper body treatment. The procedures for each respective body lift goes as follows:

Upper Body Lift

Good Candidates

Good candidates for a body lift procedure are men and women who have a large amount of excess skin on the upper body, lower body, or both. These patients should be in good health and close to their ideal weight. Diet and exercise can get someone to their ideal weight, but it cannot tighten loose skin once it has stretched to a certain point; this is when a body lift is necessary.

Patients should have reasonable expectations of the procedure outcome. It is important to note that this procedure is not an alternative for weight loss, but rather a corrective procedure to address excess skin that has resulted from weight loss. Patients can customize a body lift to address their specific concerns, just one of the reasons why this procedure has a very high patient satisfaction rating.

Consultation

During the initial consultation, Dr. Ashruf will speak with the patient one on one regarding their particular concerns and desired outcomes. The doctor will then review the patient’s medical history, previous surgeries, and routine medications. This information will help assist the doctor in ensuring that a body lift procedure will be a safe option for the patient. Next, Dr. Ashruf will perform a physical evaluation which will help him to identify the specific areas that can be enhanced and to determine if this procedure will be a good fit to obtain the patient’s desired results. Once candidacy is determined, the doctor and the patient will work together to construct an individualized treatment plan that will help achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals.

Preparation

Before undergoing one or both of the body lift techniques, Dr. Ashruf will provide his patients with a list of instructions that should be followed as preparation for the surgery. For patients who smoke, they will be asked to stop 3 weeks prior to undergoing surgery. Patients will also be asked to refrain from taking any anti-inflammatory medications for 2 weeks before their body lift.

We recommended our patients to prep their home for the recovery stage. This may entail placing any necessary recovery items at counter level ahead of time to avoid reaching during the healing process. We also ask that our patients arrange for a ride home following the procedure, as they will be unable to drive themselves. If patients have any questions during this time, please contact our office and speak with our knowledgeable and helpful staff.

Body Lift Techniques

Lower Body Lift

Before beginning the procedure, our certified anesthesiologist will administer a general anesthetic. Dr. Ashruf will use liposuction to remove any localized fat deposits that remained on the lower half of the body after weight loss efforts. After the fat has been removed, an incision will be made along the pubic line and possibly on the outside or inside of the thighs. The muscles along the abdominal wall will first be tightened.

Often times, our ab muscles can become separated after weight gain and when left untreated can leave the stomach looking bloated. Next, sagging skin on the abdomen is removed; any lax skin that covers the flanks and the lower back will also be removed and the skin will appear tighter.

The next step to this procedure is to contour the buttocks and provided added lift. He may make incisions at the top of the buttocks, on the hips, near the groin, or under the buttock cheeks to remove excess skin, then pulling the skin tighter and closing the incisions. Depending on the patient’s particular case, additional liposuction can be performed to sculpt the patient’s desire buttock shape.

The final part of this procedure is contouring the thighs. Dr. Ashruf will remove drooping skin with one of several thigh lift techniques such as a medial thigh lift, mini thigh lift, or spiral thigh lift. After the excess skin and tissue have been removed, the skin will be pulled tight and the incisions will be closed.

Drains may be placed in the incisions to accumulate surgical fluids that may build up in the treatment areas. Once the procedure has been completed, Dr. Ashruf will wrap the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs in compression garments and the patient will be taken to the recovery area.

Upper Body Lift

Our certified anesthesiologist will begin the procedure by administering the general anesthetic to ensure no discomfort will be felt throughout the surgery. If the patient has remaining fat deposits throughout their upper arms, liposuction can be used. Once the fat has been removed, the doctor will then make an incision along the back of the arm from the elbow to the armpit to remove the excess skin.

The incision may extend down the armpit to the bra line to address upper back skin laxity, which is explained more below. The type of incision depends greatly on the amount of excess skin that the patient has. The remaining skin will be tightened, reducing the overall circumference of the upper arm.

Once the doctor has contoured the arms nicely, he will then address the upper back. The back lift will remove the pesky skin and excess fat that creates “rolls” along upper region of the back. This procedure may use liposuction to remove any remaining fat that resides within the creases or bra rolls if necessary. The remaining skin will be tightened and the incisions sutured.

The doctor will then perform a breast lift if desired; this will be determined during the consultation.

During this procedure, Dr. Ashruf will make three incisions: one around the areola, one extending from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, and the last one underneath the breast, ensuring to follow the breast’s natural crease. The excess skin will be removed and the areola will be placed higher to maintain proportion and symmetry. The doctor may place drains in the treated areas. Once the procedure is completed, Dr. Ashruf will wrap the treated areas in compression garments and the patient will be taken to the recovery area.

Recovery

Once the patient is in the recovery area, he or she will be monitored for a couple hours by our nursing staff before being released home. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the patient may be required to stay overnight. While in the recovery room, patients will be given recovery instruction to follow in order to help ensure optimal results. Before leaving the office, the patient will be given a prescription for pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort he or she may feel during the healing process. Lastly, patients will receive their first postoperative appointment date in which the drains will be removed and the doctor will begin tracking the healing process.

Once home, Dr. Ashruf recommends that his patients try to walk briefly the night after surgery to help improve blood flow and reduce the risk of blood clots from forming. The compression garments should remain on to help with any swelling or bruising that may occur in the treated areas. Patients should refrain from their daily activities for several weeks. More strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 8 weeks. For patients who choose to undergo both the upper and lower body lift procedures combined, recovery and downtime may be longer.

Results

The results of a body lift can be seen instantly, however, the full results will be apparent after 6 months once the swelling has fully subsided. Patients will often begin to experience an increase in confidence and an improved body image as clothes begin to fit better. The lower body lift procedure will provide improvements to the definition of the abdomen, the shape of the buttocks, and the contour of the thighs – specifically reducing their circumference and well as creating a smooth, firm surface. For the results of the upper body lift, patients can enjoy a youthfully elevated bust and a firmer appearance to their upper arms as well as a smoother upper back.

Cost of a Body Lift

The cost of a body lift is highly individualistic. Being that no two patients are the same, a body lift procedure will be tailored to the patient’s specific goals and desired outcomes. It is also important to note that the procedure prices will vary depending on if the patient chooses to undergo one or both of the body lift procedures. For this reason, it is necessary for patients to come in for a consultation with Dr. Ashruf in order to receive a personalized quote.
