What Is Hyperhidrosis?

A medical condition named severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sometimes better as severe underarm sweating affects about 4 million people in the United States. Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition that involves overactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling. As you probably know, people with excessive sweating have to do a lot to deal with their condition.

How We Deal With Sweat

  • Change clothes frequently
  • Put absorbent materials under clothing
  • Avoid certain fabrics and styles of clothes
  • Seek medical attention and treatment

While people with severe underarm sweating may choose many different antiperspirants, in some instances those products do not work well enough for their sweating. In the past, products such as clinical antiperspirants, iontophoresis or other alternative treatments procedures, have been associated with significant pain and provided only marginal improvement. Clothes become a real issue because the wrong choice of clothing can reveal your severe underarm sweating condition rather than hide it. Your wardrobe can be very limited and due to staining and damage to fabrics, and you may have to purchase new clothing frequently.

Causes

Sweating helps the body stay cool. In most cases, it is perfectly natural. People sweat more in warm temperatures, when they exercise, or in response to situations that make them nervous, angry, embarrassed, or afraid.

Excessive sweating occurs without the usual triggers. Individuals with hyperhidrosis have excessive sweat glands, this causes significant discomfort, both physical and emotional.

When excessive sweating affects the hands, feet, and armpits, it’s called primary or focal hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis affects 2 – 3% of the population, yet less than 40% of patients with this condition seek medical advice. In the majority of primary hyperhidrosis cases, no cause can be found. It seems to run in families.

How Severe is your Hyperhidrosis?

Here are some things to consider when thinking about the severity of your hyperhidrosis.

  • How many times a day do you have to change clothes?
  • Do you carry supplies (change of clothes, antiperspirant, towels, powders, etc) to help you manage the effects of your severe underarm sweating?
  • Have you been treated with any prescription antiperspirants, powders, or deodorants designed to control severe underarm sweating?
  • How many hours per day to you spend dealing with your severe underarm sweating?
  • How often do you think about your severe underarm sweating?

Treatment with Precision Tx™

Dr. Ashruf uses Precision TX™ to treat excessive sweating, otherwise known as hyperhidrosis, in his Hanover, Maryland surgical center. Precision TX™ is the most advanced approach for dealing with excessive sweating that is minimally-invasive, only requires one treatment and offers lasting results. This revolutionary, minimally-invasive procedure utilizes a unique and focused delivery of laser energy to target and ablate the function of sweat glands within the axillae (underarms).

Dr. Ashruf is the first in the Annapolis, Washington DC area to offer Precision TX™ (from Cynosure®, the makers of SmartLipo TriPlex™ and Cellulaze™). This outpatient procedure causes minimal downtime with most patients returning to work the next day.

How does the Precision TX™ treatment for hyperhidrosis work?

The procedure is performed using a very small cannula (or tube about the size of the tip of a pen) which is inserted under the skin. This cannula has a proprietary SideLaze™ fiber inside of it, the design of which allows the laser energy and heat to be directed upward toward the undersurface of the skin, directly at the sweat glands (and hair follicles). The laser then destroys the sweat glands in the treatment area.

With the power of this single, minimally invasive treatment, our patients are able to take control of their axillary hyperhidrosis and enjoy their lives.
