There are many reasons why women may choose to come in for a breast revision. Breast revision procedures are most commonly associated with the desire to change breast implant size. They can also be performed on women who are unhappy with their breast augmentation results from another practice, because they want to change the type of implants they have, or because of unforeseen medical issues such as implant rupture or capsular contracture. However, breast implants aren’t designed to last indefinitely, so breast revision may be performed because the implant has reached its lifespan and a replacement is necessary.
Whatever the reason, Dr. Ashruf at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery & Laser Center of Maryland is here to help women achieve the beautiful results they desired. Contact us today to get started!
About Breast Revision
Breast revision is a secondary procedure designed for women who have already undergone primary breast augmentation with implants. It is also referred to as breast implant removal and replacement because the implants are quite literally removed and replaced with new but identical implants, or implants of a different size, composition, or shape. For women who have issues with their current implants or are unsatisfied with the results of their primary breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Salman Ashruf is one of the top breast revision plastic surgeons in the greater Baltimore area.

Why Women Undergo Breast Revision
There is no single reason why women choose breast revision surgery. These are just some of the many reasons why women come into Dr. Ashruf’s practice seeking a breast revision.
- Desire different implant size, shape, material, or placement
- Time for an implant replacement
- Implant rupture
- Capsular contracture
- Breast asymmetry or deformity
- Implant rippling
However, there are no “right” or “wrong” reasons for desiring breast revision. Dr. Ashruf is happy to offer his expertise to patients considering breast revision surgery.
Patients should contact Dr. Ashruf in Hanover, MD to find out if they would be a good candidate for breast revision surgery.
Women who desire implant characteristic changes, are unsatisfied with their implant placement, or are experiencing complications from their implants may be good candidates for breast revision surgery.
Prior to undergoing breast revision surgery, women should be in good mental and physical health. They should be at a healthy and stable weight and be nonsmokers. They should not have any significant medical conditions that may affect their ability to undergo or heal from surgery. They should also have realistic expectations of what can be achieved from breast revision surgery. The surgery will be very similar to the initial breast augmentation.
Sometimes women come into the consultation with concerns about their implants, when the problem isn’t their implants at all. At Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Center of Maryland, we believe that communication is key to a successful procedure. When discussing the patient’s concerns, Dr. Ashruf will determine the best procedure or combination of procedures to give them their desired results.
In some cases, a woman’s implants are in great condition but their breasts may have started to droop. Breasts begin to sag as a result of gravity, aging, childbirth, and weight loss. Luckily, sagging, also known as ptosis, can be remedied with a breast lift procedure.
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, will lift the breasts to a higher and more attractive position. It can typically be performed using the same incisions that were used during the patient’s initial breast augmentation. If necessary, Dr. Ashruf can perform a breast lift at the same time as a breast revision.
Patients with particularly large implants may notice that the skin around their breasts has become particularly thin. This may cause the implant to be noticeable under the skin. In order to combat this, Dr. Ashruf can perform a fat transfer in combination with a breast revision.
A fat transfer procedure uses the patient’s own fat to add volume to the breasts. Liposuction is first performed where the patient has excess fat deposits. Some common areas where liposuction is performed include the arms, back, abdomen, flanks, and thighs. Then, the fat will be cleaned and injected into the breasts to add natural volume.
This procedure can also be performed on patients who wish to remove their breast implants entirely, but still want to maintain some volume.
Breast revision surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, which means that the patient will be able to return home following the procedure. However, because of the anesthesia, patients should make arrangements for somebody else to pick them up and drive them home following surgery. The revision surgery can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the type of revision required.
No breast revision surgery is exactly alike. Each procedure needs to be tailored to the patient’s unique needs. If possible, Dr. Ashruf will use the pre existing incisions to perform the surgery. After he has made the proper incisions, he will be able to remove the old implant. Depending on the type of revision, he may employ other techniques in order to create new pockets for the new implants. At the time of the consultation, he will be able to explain the process in more detail regarding the patient’s unique case.
Recovery from breast revision surgery is similar to that of the initial breast augmentation surgery.
Patients should plan on taking approximately 1-2 weeks off from work to allow themselves to recover fully. They should avoid strenuous activities or exercise for three weeks. However, patients should engage in recommended stretching exercises and light walking. Women should not wear a bra with underwire for the prescribed amount of time. Instead, they will be provided with a surgical bra that should be worn at all times, with the exception of in the shower.
The most common side effects of breast revision surgery are bruising and swelling around the incision sites. This will dissipate on its own over the course of 2-3 weeks. In order to minimize these side effects, we recommend keeping the head and shoulders elevated for at least the first 24 hours after surgery.
Some patients may experience slight pain or discomfort in the days following the procedure. Dr. Ashruf can provide prescription medication to help alleviate this pain. Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin for at least three weeks.
At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery & Laser Center of Maryland, we believe that communication is key to attaining great results. This is why we ask all patients to come in for a consultation prior to scheduling their breast revision surgery. Please do not hesitate to arrive at consultation with questions for Dr. Ashruf already written down or photographs of breasts that represent the “look” you are hoping to achieve.
During the consultation, Dr. Ashruf will meet personally with the patient to discuss their concerns and goals. Dr. Ashruf will also perform a physical examination to determine the state of the implants and the surrounding skin and tissue. This will help inform his decisions as he draws up a comprehensive surgical plan for the patient.
Please inform Dr. Ashruf of any medical conditions that patient has or any medications they are currently taking. He will also ask the patient about any surgeries they have previously undergone.
At the end of the consultation, Dr. Ashruf will draw up a personalized procedure plan for the patient. At this time, he will be able to give the patient the best idea of what they can realistically expect from the procedure.
Once Dr. Ashruf has finished creating the procedure plan, he will also be able to provide an accurate cost estimate. The cost of breast revision surgery will vary. Some of the factors that contribute to the final cost of the procedure include anesthesia fees, medications, post-surgical garments, and preoperative screenings and tests.
