Millions of people are unhappy with the shape or size of their noses. This dissatisfaction leads many people to seek plastic surgery so that they can have a nose that they love. One way to get an improved nose is through a closed rhinoplasty, a less invasive procedure than a traditional rhinoplasty. With this method, Dr. Ashruf makes their incisions through the nostrils, which eliminates external scarring and allows for faster recovery.
What is Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at altering the shape, size, or functionality of the nose. It’s performed for a variety of reasons beyond simply enhancing aesthetic appearance—rhinoplasty can also correct congenital defects and improve breathing. During rhinoplasty, surgeons may reshape the bone, cartilage, and skin of the nose to achieve the desired outcome. Rhinoplasty requires careful consideration of facial harmony and individual patient goals, but when done correctly, it can be a life-changing procedure.
Where Closed Rhinoplasty Differs
Unlike open rhinoplasty, where a small incision is made on the strip of tissue between the nostrils, closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made entirely within the nostrils. This technique offers several advantages, including reduced visible scarring, decreased postoperative swelling, and potentially faster recovery times. Surgeons typically choose the rhinoplasty approach based on individual patient anatomy and the desired outcomes.
What To Expect
A closed rhinoplasty is usually done with general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon makes the incisions, separates your skin from the cartilage, and then either shaves the cartilage or adds volume to give your nose a new shape. Any stitches will be made inside the nose, and Dr. Ashruf will give you a nose splint for the healing period. In most cases, the closed rhinoplasty will take between one and two hours.
Recovery
You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and your splint should stay in place for around a week to take pressure off the nose during the healing period. You will need to take off work for a day or two and avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and pressure on your nose–sleeping with your head elevated is also recommended.
Expect some swelling, minor breathing difficulties, and bruising. If you have any concerning symptoms, consult with Dr. Ashruf. Results from this procedure will gradually appear over the weeks and months after the surgery. Close rhinoplasty is intended to deliver subtle improvements to your profile and general appearance.
